Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
Intermediate Level
During this ongoing class, students will have the opportunity to learn about five landforms and five water forms through Montessori themed lessons and follow up activities. Each class will be devoted to a pair of land and water forms. In each session, learners will create copies of these through a variety of mediums. In addition, students will practice writing about the land and water forms through descriptive writing techniques. Templates for writing will be provided before each lesson. The class content will be the following:

Meeting 1 This lesson will center around lake and island forms. Students will engage in an interactive slideshow and then create an island/lake model by using play doh in specific colors. Our writing activity will be comprised of a postcard from a tropical island or a lake they would like to visit. Students can share their examples with each other!

Meeting 2 This class will focus on the forms of cape and bay. After watching a teacher made slide show, learners will use scissors and colored paper to create examples of cape and bay. Our follow up will include a graphic organizer to write about specific attributes of cape and bay forms.

Meeting 3 Students will experience learning about the forms of gulf and peninsula during this lesson. After seeing a slideshow which includes a well known peninsula to the teacher, students will use materials like clay or paper to create these forms! Learners will then create a colorful poster of either a gulf or peninsula with a written description and illustrations.

Meeting 4 Students will improve their understanding of the forms of isthmus and strait in this class. Following an interactive slideshow, students can design their own isthmus or strait using bread slices or paper and colored pencils/crayons. We will complete a web graphic organizer to describe the isthmus and strait.

Meeting 5 Students will learn about system of lakes and archipelago with Montessori themed slideshow images. As a follow up activity, learners will use green and blue paper to make a map which includes many land and water forms. A system of lakes and archipelago will be featured on the student made map. Students can share what their favorite land or water form is and explain why.

This ongoing class will present a wonderful opportunity for students to learn more about the many unique land and water forms on our planet!
Students should have some experience writing sentences, cutting paper and making basic illustrations for this class.

Hello! I am so excited to teach your kiddos on Outschool! I have a degree in Elementary Education and have been teaching over 20 years. I also have a specialty Montessori certificate in grades 1-3, and a TESOL certification credential. For nine years I specialized as a learning Title I learning support teacher with a focus in reading and writing in the language arts curriculum with 5-9 year olds. I have taught 1st and 2nd grade in a Montessori classroom. I love helping children learn to read by teaching the fundamental skills of early reading, grammar and writing. I also teach many cultures themed lessons for learners where we can enjoy exploring topics of our planet and space together!
I love to help children learn and be successful in the classroom through fun and engaging activities. I like to make classes challenging and rewarding for students, and I have a very student centered approach, which is aligned with the Montessori teaching philosophy. I think of myself as a guide, who always strives to meet children at their instructional level.
Outside of teaching, I am a mother of adult boy/girl twins. My husband and I have a senior rescue terrier named Sandy and we love to go for long walks. I also enjoy living a very healthy lifestyle which includes walking, hiking, yoga, running and enjoying nature whenever possible!
Thank you for taking the time to find out more about me. I hope to see your child in the classroom soon!
