Description

Class Experience

Learners will:
- receive a broad overview of how the Universe and Earth came together. We will broadly touch upon the Solar System, the scientific theory of how the Earth and planets came together, how continents formed and changed over time to end up where they are today. We will cover basic concepts of atoms and molecules, solids, liquids and gases, volcanoes and weather systems.
- learn the history of living things, and how they have evolved over time. We will cover a broad overview of ancient life, dinosaurs and fossils, vertebrates and the eras of the Earth.
- receive a broad overview of the paleontological discoveries of when humans first appeared on the Earth and the beginning of the Stone Age. They will also learn the emergence of civilizations across the world - the Egyptians, Mesopotamians, Chinese, People of the Indus Valley, the Maya, Incas, Ancient Greeks and Romans, and will also be introduced and have an awareness of the Fundamental Needs of Humans.
- learn about ancient alphabets, how people communicated in the past through written language, hieroglyphics and pictograms. We will look at how language has developed, and how things have changed over the years, ending with how we communicate today. They will also learn the parts of speech and the corresponding Montessori grammar symbols, if they choose to do so.
- learn the history of numbers, why number systems were developed, the concept of zero, and how we use numbers today.
- learn how to work collaboratively to create a community board for each Great Lesson, and also to present their work to others.
I am a qualified Montessori Elementary (Primary in the UK) teacher, certified to teach 6-12 year olds. I have taught students within independent schools in the UK, and also taught small groups of homeschooled children who were aged 6-9. This class is based on and adapted from material I have presented previously.
All work will be undertaken individually, and will be fed back to the learning group by way of a community learning board on Padlet. Learners will be given journal prompts to research, and will also be able to choose their own topics to research.
Learners may need basic craft supplies if they choose to create something related to the class.
For the 1st Great Lesson, parents may wish their children to follow along with some of the experiments as they are presented. If you wish to do this, you will need a candle (and a way to light it - parental supervision needed) or a torch/flashlight, 3 jars - one containing water, one ice, one nothing, another small jar, coloured water, honey, vegetable oil, sugar cubes, a bowl and spoon, a separate bowl of water, some flour or powdered sugar. Instructions will be given on how to conduct these experiments.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
  • Padlet
No live meetings, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
In the first Great Lesson presentation, there will be one loud bang in the class video, as I pop a balloon. I will give a warning, so that any auditory-sensitive learners can temporarily turn the sound down for that short segment.
I will be using the secular version of the Montessori First Great Lesson, as written by Montessorian, Barbara Dubinsky. The Great Lesson presentations can be reviewed here http://missbarbara.net/
