Are fractions frustrating? They really don't have to be. In fact, guess what? They can be FUN! Of all of the math, in all of the world, fraction math is my very favorite kind of math. One of my favorite things about teaching fractions is getting to use my Montessori material. Even if your learner is not currently in a Montessori school and maybe has never learned with Montessori methods before, the fractions material make seeing what is happening with the fractions very concrete. It's this...
Ultimately, I'd love for the learner to come away with a solid understanding and appreciation for fractions. Maybe they won't be their very favorite part of math, but I hope they won't be something to run away from!
I am certified as an Upper Elementary Montessori guide and have been teaching Montessori math online for over two years.
I'll add some practice work to the classroom weekly. They will be either worksheets or task cards with enough practice for the week. I'm happy to review their work and provide feedback if that is helpful to you, but it is not required.
It would be wonderful if your learner had Montessori Fraction Circles. Ideally they would have a set of 1-1/10 and 1/11-1/20. I understand that these sets are very expensive however and they may choose to just watch me. You might also choose to get other fraction circles. Those will work for simple equations and are great for the learning of the concepts. They will typically only come with enough fraction pieces to make one whole from each fraction (for example: it would come with eight 1/8 pieces) whereas the Montessori set will allow for making many wholes from each fraction type. It is optional to have the manipulatives for home use, though I do encourage it if you are able. Another option would be to print and cut fraction circles onto cardstock. These can be found online in downloadable form. If you need help choosing the best option for your learner please feel free to message me.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I am happy to check weekly practice work although I will not be assigning formal grades for this class.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.

As a trained Montessori teacher I aspire to instill the love of learning into all of my students. I hope that they will come to enjoy subjects that they may have thought they didn't like before; history, government, economics, geography, botany,...
