Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten
This preschool English reading class delivers reading fluency skills that lay the groundwork for literacy growth. The overarching goal is to foster a love for reading while equipping students with essential strategies to decode words, comprehend texts, and engage meaningfully with stories.

We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.

Students will be taught fundamental reading skills such as letter recognition, an understanding of reality verses fiction, and use inferencing skills to pull information from a text. Additionally, they will explore concepts like print awareness, understanding that text conveys meaning and is read from left to right and top to bottom. Vocabulary development will be encouraged through exposure to a variety of words and contexts.

Topics covered include:

- Letter recognition and phonics

- Print awareness and concepts of print

- Vocabulary development

- Comprehension strategies such as predicting, summarizing (at a basic level), and making connections to personal experiences

Class structure:

The class will be structured to be engaging and interactive, catering to the developmental stages of kindergarteners. It will include a balance of activities such as interactive read-aloud sessions where teachers model reading behaviors and engage students in discussions about the story, small group activities where students practice phonics skills and sight word recognition through games and hands-on activities, individual reading time where students explore age-appropriate books independently or with guidance, and creative activities such as drawing or storytelling related to the texts read in class.

Teaching will be child-centered and hands-on, focusing on active participation and multi-sensory experiences. My teaching style will be nurturing and supportive, fostering a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable taking risks and expressing their thoughts. I will model enthusiasm for reading and learning, encouraging curiosity and exploration.

Student's will have ample opportunities to interact with me and peers through a variety of methods such as interactive read-aloud sessions, visual aids (slides or posters), and discussions.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to recognize and name uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet, as well as associate each letter with its corresponding sound. They will learn to identify letters in various contexts and connecting letters to the sounds.
Students will develop an understanding of how print works, including recognizing letters, words, sentences, and understanding the basic conventions of reading. They will learn concepts such as left-to-right and top-to-bottom and spacing between words.
