Class Experience

Is your young Spanish-speaker ready to explore word recognition? This class--led 95-100% in Spanish--is designed for young children who are already advanced* in Spanish and just ready to start learning to read. Familiarity with letter names and letter sounds and the digits 1-6, will help, but they may or may not feel confident in these yet. While we will mention letters and letter sounds, we will treat the words more as sight words to recognize.

1. Welcome
2. Introduce words (Monstruo, tiene, mamá, papá, bebé, ojos, casa, and numbers 1-6 written as digits) as we playfully practice recognizing the words,
3. Practice the words together in short phrases,
4. Read together the beginning reader "Monstruos en mi casa" written by the instructor, and
5. Sing a song about "Cinco monstruitos" if time permits.

While this class works great as a follow-up to my class "Mi Monstruo Beginning Reader for Kids Advanced in Spanish - Tiene & More" and uses some of the same words and incorporates others, learners are welcome to join this class without having attended the other. The book itself stands on its own.

After class, learners will receive a copy of the book we read in class to practice further outside of class.

*These students may be--for example--heritage speakers, children who have attended an immersion preschool, or "life-time speakers" with a parent or caregiver who has spoken to them in Spanish since infancy.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I received a minor in the Spanish language with my bachelor degree (2011). Later, I went on to complete the seven-week, level-five Spanish course at Roca Blanca Spanish School in Catalotepec, Mexico (2018). I have taught group Spanish classes to a variety of ages over a span of five years, four years of which were online. In 2018-2019, I led a preschool co-op in Spanish, primarily to children who were already fluent. Additionally, I have been raising my children primarily in Spanish since 2016.
