Monster Math Puzzles: Subtraction, Expressions and Problem Solving

*This class does NOT require purchasing books or subscriptions from Beast Academy. This class focuses on learning math strategies to complete some of the Beast Academy puzzles, but does not cover all the topics in each chapter.*

Calling all math and puzzle-loving kids! Join the monsters from Beast Academy as we tackle some challenging math puzzles together. We will be reading a comic-book style text where the monsters show strategies to do advanced subtraction, tackle expressions and problem solving. For example, how can we solve 356-198? We will then work together to solve different math puzzles each week. If your child has a solid grasp of basic addition and subtraction and also loves sudoku-style puzzles and brain teasers, they will love this class! This class best fits students working at a 3rd-4th grade level in math and includes topics in Beast Academy 2B, chapters 4, 5 and 6. 

Week of February 15: Using place value to solve two and three digit subtraction problems and X Out puzzles
Week of February 22: Three digit fact families and Subtraction Three Fours Puzzles
Week of March 1:  Counting Up Strategy and Mismo puzzles
Week of March 8: Take a little extra, then add it back
Week of March 15: Introduce Expressions and Cross-Number puzzles
Week of March 22: Understanding Parentheses 
Week of March 29: Expressions with Symbols
Week of April 5: Simplifying Expressions and Simplifying Mismo puzzle
NO CLASS WEEK OF APRIL 12
Week of April 19: Problem Solving using Guessing Strategies
Week of April 26: Problem Solving while Working Backwards
Week of May 3 : Problem Solving: Handshake problems
Week of May 10: Problem Solving: Sum Boxes
Week of May 17: Problem Solving:Counting Paths
Week of May 24: Problem Solving: Organizing


In the materials section you will see the students need a pencil and if possible a printed copy of the puzzles. This class is not endorsed or affiliated with AoPS or Beast Academy, but we will be using some of their free resources.
