Calling all puzzle-loving kids! Join the monsters from Beast Academy as we tackle some challenging math puzzles together. We will be reading a comic-book style text where the monsters show strategies to understand place value and addition. We will then work together to solve different math puzzles each week. If your child has a solid grasp of basic addition and subtraction and also loves sudoku-style puzzles and brain teasers, they will love this class! This class best fits students working at a 3rd-4th grade level in math and includes topics from Beast Academy 2A, mostly chapter 3. Week 1: Explore place value by learning pirate math and pathway puzzles Week 2: Finding sums, regrouping and cross-number puzzles Week 3: Strategies for mental addition and pyramid puzzles Week 4: Commutative and Associate properties of addition and sum blob puzzles In the materials section you will see the students need a pencil and if possible a printed copy of the puzzles. This class is not endorsed or affiliated with AoPS or Beast Academy, but we will be using some of their free resources.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome! My name is Ashley and I am a mother of two kids ages 10 and 14. I absolutely love to teach kids how to crack the reading code and become confident readers. I am certified in both early childhood and elementary education and have experience teaching a variety of ages. I have my Masters of Education with certificates in effective teaching of reading as well as mild to moderate learning disabilities. I am a trained Orton Gillingham teacher, which is a multi I am also passionate about challenging students to develop a growth mindset and try difficult things. When I am not teaching or caring for my family, I am learning something new myself- how to paint with watercolors! I have not taken an art class since middle school, so it's been a big learning curve for me, but I'm enjoying it immensely.
