What's included

12 live meetings
9 in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. A list of possible assignments will be given. Students will be given the option to pursue whichever assignments they like. Completing assignments will give them achievements and xp (experience points) that will help them to level up in their quest to be the ultimate Legendary Monster Hunter!
Assessment
Students will be assessed on XP or experience points. These directly correlate to varying levels of expertise at the “guild”. They will gain XP through class participation, assignments, answering questions, helping others and pop quiz style “battles”.

Class Experience

Each class students will go on an in depth investigation of monsters and troublesome mythological creatures. Together we will compare monsters found in cultures around the world, and study the similarities and differences. Students will hypothesize why these monsters came to exist in these societies. In the process they will gain experience points, and strategize how to defeat the monsters to become the ultimate Monster Hunter!

This class will be designed in a very interactive video game style. Students will be assessed on XP or experience points. As their XP grows, they will level up at the “guild”. Students will gain XP through class participation, assignments, answering questions, helping others and pop quiz style “battles” where they will go head to head to test their knowledge.

I think that excitement about learning is contagious, and that students can learn as much from each other as they can the teacher. Students will be given opportunities to form "adventure parties" to solve problems and gain achievements. What work they do individually outside of class will be also be shared and new information presented in the beginning of every class. With the gaming model, self-directed learning outside of class is optional, but fun. Moreover it taps into children's competitive nature which propels them to learn far beyond mandated tasks.
