The only homework is that we ask children to come to workshop with a possible purchase in mind, and an image or photo of the item or experience in question. Every student receives a pdf summary of all the math and thinking they have done when calculating the DIMS - Does It Make Sense? Score for a possible purchase. They can embed an image into that summary, which is particularly helpful if they are going to forward it to out-of-town family members who may have asked what your son or daughter might like to receive for an upcoming holiday or birthday gift.Assessment
Before you know it, your kids will be asking themselves "What's the DIMS Score?" before spending their money, or anyone else's! Your family will be able to discuss the pros and cons of possible purchases in a relaxed but structured fashion, because you'll be armed with all the relevant information, in advance of having to make a decision. Parents are shocked to see children change their minds about a possible purchase after calculating the DIMS Score. Kids are shocked to see how quickly their parents get behind a request when it is made in advance, with thought and manners. Fewer, better quality requests to spend, improve family harmony.Class Experience
US Grade 6 - 9
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Money-Smarts 101 is a 55 minute hands-on, interactive workshop, where children learn how to think before they buy. This involves discussing why thinking before buying does so much more than just save us money, then taking it for a "test drive" by quickly researching the full value of a possible purchase, as well as how much the item or experience being considered, will really be used and appreciated, BEFORE, your child asks for it. Kids learn about things like Sales Tax, Return Policies, Warranties, Cost-Per-Use, and DIMS - Does It Make Sense? Scores. DIMS SCORES are a number between 1 and 10 that help children understand if what they are after is more a "want" or a "need". Of course there is nothing wrong with buying "wants", it's just helpful to call a purchase what it is! We calculate DIMS (Does It Make Sense?) SCORES using a very straightforward digital worksheet that your family can email or print off, to help discuss the pros and cons of a purchase. Kids can even calculate the total cost of attending their first concert or professional sporting event – including safe transportation, snacks and souvenirs – because the ticket price is only the beginning. Appropriate at any time of the year, when kids are heading off-to-camp, back-to-school, making holiday or birthday wish-lists.
Learning Goals
Children experience that thinking before buying does NOT mean you never get to do or buy anything fun! It just means that you plan your spending to avoid disappointment (buyer's remorse), reduce waste, improve family harmony, and protect the planet!

My formal education is in Economics. I worked for a global bank as a Risk Analyst before my family was born. My family is now grown. I have been teaching kids how to think before they buy for over 8 years now - and I love it! Thinking before buying is the cornerstone of being money-smart because it allows school-aged children to practice getting and using (at first basic) financial information to make their lives better. Asking and answering simple questions about typical childhood purchases very naturally reveals that anyone can, and should want, to ask questions about money! This is why I believe giving kids the habit of thinking before buying is one of the best gifts ever. And - it's not that hard a gift to give.
GiftingSense.org (we use the Gifting Sense DIMS SCORE® calculator in workshop) has been recognized at the Money Awareness & Inclusion Awards for three years running: As one of the best Non-Profit School-Aged Financial Education Programs available in 2022, as the Runner-Up for the SKBI Sustainable Finance Literacy Prize in 2023, and again as one of the best non-profit financial education programs for school-aged children in 2024.
