I am creating this class based on the feedback I have received from my first class: Money, Money, Money: The Life-Changing Power of Budgeting and Investing Young, requesting a more detailed look at investing. While that class serves as a basic introduction to both budgeting and investing, this class will focus more on investing. If your learners have taken my first class and are wanting to know more specifics about investing, this class is for them! If your learner hasn't yet taken Money,...
Students will gain an understanding of some of the basic funds there are in the stock market and how to compare and contrast them. They will build their critical thinking skills by building on some of their knowledge about what makes an investment better than another investment based on personal goals.
I was lucky enough to be born into a family of financial advisors and investors (both my dad and brother work in the field). I enjoy reading books, listening to podcasts, and researching a variety of investment options.
Student will need to complete a sheet about the information about a stock market fund of their choosing. I suggest using https://money.usnews.com/investing to research your chosen stock, but they might need to do research outside of this website to get a full picture of their chosen investment.
1 file available upon enrollmentA handout for your student to fill in is provided for their homework.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Your learner will be assessed through their ability to not only fill in the document they have created about their stock, but also to evaluate the different stocks presented in class.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Your learners will likely need your support in choosing a fund to research. My suggestion is to use https://money.usnews.com/investing in your search. However, their research might begin with a quick google search of something like: 'best mutual funds to invest in.'
