Homework
1-2 hours per week. Students will be given a reflection assignment each day. This reflection assignment will involve the students in writing down what they learned in the completed session and what they need to learn. Also, some classwork may lead to having students do a bit of research on their own. This assignment step is important in helping students develop independent learning skills.
Assessment
Students will complete a 10 question multiple-choice investing quiz at the end of the course.

Class Experience

In the Savings and Investing course, students will be taught the basics of how money grows through savings and investing. They will also be introduced to the concepts of financial risk and rates of return. The course topics include calculating simple interest, financial institutions, interest rates, and stock ownership. The course structure includes activities that involve research of financial institutions, using math skills to determine the amount of money earned from different interest rates and an introduction to the riskier world of investments through stock ownership. When relevant, instructional videos will be used to enhance learning and or serve as interest builders.

A discovery learning approach will be used to deliver instruction with an emphasis on teaching students to develop and maintain independent learning habits. The discovery learning approach will involve students in activities that require classroom interactions that involve discussion of ideas, reflections, and questions related to new learning. To participate in the class, students will need curiosity for learning about saving and investing money, basic math skills needed to explore interest rates, and a willingness to interact and contribute to classroom discussions and the sharing of subject-related information.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of savings options available to increase the value of money. They will also develop skills for calculating interest rates and predicting the future values of money. These learning goals will be accomplished through objectives that motivate students to
1. Consider alternative ways to help money grow through savings.
2. Apply simple math concepts to determine the future value of money.
3. Become knowledgeable of the concept of investment risk.

My teaching credentials include

I have a reading specialist credential in the State of Texas and California. I also have a Language Development Specialist credential and an English Language Arts Specialist credential in the state of California.

I employ a constructivist approach to learning. In this constructivist approach, students rely on previous learning, teacher guidance, peer collaboration, and active learning strategies to create new learning. My teacher's role in this constructivist approach is to model and facilitate the direction of learning to maximize learning success for each student.

My educational philosophy is... 'learning is everything and everyone can learn!'. Each successful learning experience grows the confidence needed to maintain an interest in pursuing life-long successful learning adventures. As my favorite teacher, Coach John Wooden of the UCLA Bruins stated: “Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”

Happy and successful learning adventures to all and I hope to meet each of you in class very soon! --Dr. Harper :)
