Description
Class Experience
I want to offer kids a holistic approach to learning art. Art goes hand in hand with history, geography, and even science. Teaching art through living literature (not textbooks) and questions, helps engage children's minds in the process. Having spent many years leading children in different avenues of learning, I have built upon my own abilities to provide kids with an experience that fully involves their minds, attention, and enthusiasm.
Week One: -Water colour paper -soft pastels NOT oil pastels (colourful - recommend a 24 pack) -a tray, sized to fit an entire piece of watercolor paper in the tray flat (tray should be filled with about 1 inch of water prior to class) -butter knife or any tool that is safe to scrape the pastels, that will fit easily in child’s hand -paint brushes (variety of sizes) -container (bowl or cup) with water -a couple of paper towels or an old cloth -small squares of paper (about 10) cut at 4 inches by 4 inches (they can be scrap pieces, white is best) Week Two: -Canvas (size no smaller than 9 by 12 inches and no bigger than 16 by 20 inches) -acrylic paints (black, yellow, purple, sky blue, bright red, brown, white, green, orange) -a mixture of paintbrush sizes (definitely need smaller, fine size, for thin lines) -container (bowl or cup) with water -paper towel or cloth for cleaning brushes -pencils (2) sharpened and eraser -q-tips -plate or painters pallet** Week Three: -watercolor paper -acrylic paints from last class -paint brushes -soft pastels -q-tips -pencils and eraser -container with water -paper towel or cloth for cleaning brushes Week Four: -watercolor paper -acrylic paints from last class -paint brushes -soft pastels -q-tips -container (bowl or cup) with water -paper towel or cloth for cleaning brushes *Note: You DO NOT need to purchase the Monet art (mentioned above in the outline) in any form as they will be in the presentation and will be looked at via screen. **Also, a painters pallet from a dollar/discount store might be a big help to the student for mixing colours, rather than a plate.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Parental guidance is not needed but is encouraged. An appropriate area is required for students to work on that will allow for paint and water. I always suggest that parents be in the area of their child(ren) for encouragement and possible technical assistance. It also helps the child to relax knowing that someone is physically there if they do not understand how to ask a question or are needing to speak up for themselves. I LOVE questions!!!
