In this one-hour class, we will analyze the five major modes of writing: narrative, descriptive, expository/explanatory, persuasive, and argumentative. Students will be able to identify the type of essay they are being asked to write by comparing and contrasting the various writing modes. Students will practice using actual writing prompts. In addition, we will practice and apply a strategy called "unpacking the prompt"; students use this strategy to identify and map keywords in a writing prompt, which allows them to identify the type of essay they need to write. Analyzing a prompt is a critical skill! Even the best writers get marked down on essay assessments if their essay does not answer the prompt. For example, if the student receives an expository prompt (wherein they are asked to explain a concept) but instead writes a descriptive essay (wherein they describe the concept), the essay will receive a deduction. This class covers one of the very first steps in the writing process. I look forward to meeting you; I know I can help your child become a successful writer!
Learning Goals
Students will be able to identify the type of essay they are being asked to write by analyzing the five modes of writing. Students will also learn and practice the "unpack the prompt" strategy.
