Class Experience

The kind of poetry that people are writing today isn't lofty, dry, or shakespeare-sounding, but in most English classes that's what we learn about. This class is a taste of what the modern poetry scene actually looks like, and what you could expect from a real poetry club or open mic night. Each week, I'll introduce a kind of modern poetry (think: Slam poems, music as poetry, etc.) or themed prompt, and give a 10-15 minute talk with examples. Then everyone will get a chance to share what they wrote for last week's prompt. If you submit your poem(s) to me, I can also send back advice and potential edits. The main idea for this class is to function as a community of peers who support each other's writing, and to continue to improve your writing skills. Any level of writing ability is welcome! Hope to see you in class.

Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
Since high school, I have been a part of writing groups just like this one! Most recently I started one with my classmates while we were studying abroad in the Galapagos, and we still meet every week over zoom.
