Description

Class Experience

This is a phonics class for first graders. We will begin with foundational phonics skills to master reading. This class is engaging, interactive, and structured with the purpose to give students the confidence they need to read and write successfully. In the first class, students will review blends and digraphs with the short vowel sound 'a', use the moveable alphabet to build words, and then put those words into context with a short story that includes appropriate sight words. Students will participate from a place of confidence. They will review and practice phonics, and then use those skills to build words and put them into context. Each lesson will be designed to continuously build upon a child's background knowledge so they are able to recognize, recall, and spell words with blends and digraphs. As they do this they will master short vowel sounds. In this way, students will not be confused later with long vowels, ambiguous vowels, and other phonics concepts such as the controlled 'r'.
