Modern History of Women's Gymnastics: 1960-Present

In this one-time course, students will receive an overview of international elite women's gymnastics from the 1960s to today.

Class experience

Students will gain knowledge and deepen their appreciation for the sport of women's artistic gymnastics, learn about notable gymnasts of the past, and be directed toward further resources for their fandom.
My gymnastics fandom began when I was a competitive gymnast as a tween and teen. I subscribed to all of the gymnastics magazines, set my VCR to record every international gymnastics event, and wallpapered my bedroom with gymnastics posters. After I stopped competing, I coached full-time for many years, and still follow the sport to this day. While I no longer work as a gymnastics instructor, I still have great love for the sport and its athletes.

Examples: In 1992 while visiting family in Atlanta, I traveled to the suburban gym where Daniela Silivas was coaching. I still have the photo I took with her and the tee shirt she signed. In 1996, I was in the cheap seats of the Georgia Dome when Kerri Strug landed on one foot. I also have an amazing photo of Svetlana Boginskaya smiling and waving right at me during podium training there! In 1998, I was at the Goodwill Games in New York when Sang Lan had her accident. I am knowledgeable about gymnastics the way that the biggest football fan you know is knowledgeable about their sport.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Gymnasts from countries around the world will be discussed. This course is a celebration of athletes, and will not involve discussion of coaches, physicians, or the sport's governing bodies.
