Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
This class is taught in English.
Students will develop historical interpretation skills, refine critical thinking skills, and gain a deeper understanding of why it is important to study the way the world works. Guided reading of non-fiction encourages study skills that can lead to greater reading comprehension. Class discussion promotes good communication skills, and encourages mutual respect for people with different opinions.
I have a BA in Political Science, History, and Secondary Education and a MA in American Studies. I have over 10 years of experience teaching high school and college students social studies and critical thinking skills, and have been developing curriculum for homeschooled students for the last 7 years. I am currently serving as an Education Ambassador for the Council on Foreign Relations. My expertise in teaching is in helping students see the many ways that history, geography, politics, and economics intersect.
Homework Offered
Homework will include reading a chapter of the book, plus an additional 1-2 articles and/or short videos. Students can access the materials through print, ebook, audiobook, text-to-voice reader, or having someone read aloud to them. Book chapters range between 25-35 pages long. Additionally, students are expected to answer assigned comprehension and opinion questions to prepare for class discussion.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
All students will be provided with a summary of topics covered and skills practiced. A student can be assigned a grade if desired. Grades will be based on the quality and depth of class discussion and written answers to comprehension and opinion questions.
Grades Offered
0Students must have their own copy of "Prisoners of Geography" by Tim Marshall, widely available in multiple formats online for $3-$20.
The study of geopolitics is full of potential controversy. In my classes, I welcome civil, informed discussion based on non-biased sources.
