Class Experience

Students will learn how to create beautiful calligraphy in the modern style in this multi-week course, with a pen, Crayola markers, and watercolor brushes.

Previous drawing experience is beneficial but not required for this class. I love to interact and talk with my students during the creation process. I am a fun and energetic teacher, and that translates to my classroom. All feedback given is positive, and I love troubleshooting design questions the student may have. I impress upon other students that suggestions and comments are to be kept positive during the creative process.

I will lead a class discussion, show visual examples of modern calligraphy to spark the imagination, and offer advice and feedback during the handwriting process. I will also be doing a live demonstration of the process, showing techniques to help form different strokes and letters, and demonstrating techniques using the different media: pen, marker, and watercolor brush.

Students will learn to create lines, loops, upstrokes, and downstrokes. They will study and learn basic typography terminology: serif letters (decorative), sans-serif letters (basic), kerning (spaces between letters), and leading (spaces between lines and words). They will experiment with different pressures used to create strokes and learn the sweet spot needed for controlling the pen, marker, and brush.

Week 1:
Students will practice lines and loops, downstrokes, and upstrokes: with pen and marker.
Practice letters: a, c, d, e, g, o, q
Week 2:
Practice letters: b, h, j, k, p, y, v I, l, t, u, m, n, f, v, w, r, s, x
Week 3:
Students will transition to brush marker and/or watercolor brush and practice the whole alphabet with a brush. We will discuss kerning and leading while practicing decorative joins; common words. The differences between serif and sans serif will be noted and demonstrated.
Week 4:
We will work on sketches for their inspirational quote, using decorative joins, bouncy lettering, and different serif and sans serif letters.

I do not believe this is a sensitive or high-risk topic but have made every effort to be transparent with all expectations in this course.
