Let's make history fun and interactive! This course is designed to expose students to famous modern artists and 20th century art movements. I teach many of these courses as one-time classes, but this class will compile these into a summer camp that meets live for four consecutive days. Day 1: Pablo Picasso: exploring Cubism and abstract art. Day 2: Frida Kahlo: create a self-portrait inspired by the art movement Magical Realism. Day 3: Henri Matisse: his collection of cut-outs will be the inspiration for our paper collage art. Day 4: Salvador Dali: design your own surrealist creatures and explore the art technique of frottage. This 4-day course is designed to be very interactive. There is a short lecture with slides, photos and videos to discuss the artist and their works. Students will be welcome to comment and asked to share their perspectives and opinions during the class. Next, we will work on creating artwork inspired by the artist. Our creation segment is a great time for socializing and getting to know one another. I encourage our young artists to be original and express themselves through their art. At the end of class we typically share our work with one another, and students are welcome to take a photograph of the finished piece and post it in our classroom as well! Please see materials list below to ensure you have the correct supplies on hand.

Parental Guidance
The works of Picasso, Dali and Matisse often feature nude bodies and subjects that may be troubling to sensitive students (such as warfare and violence). The works shown in class are screened and specifically selected to minimize exposure, and many facts regarding their personal lives are intentionally left out in order to make the content age-appropriate. Feel free to contact me in advance if you would like to preview the paintings that are included during the presentation. Also be aware that you may need to screen any additional research done by the student independently (i.e., internet searches), if they show an interest in learning more about the artist.
Frida Kahlo's horrific auto accident and health problems might be graphic for sensitive students. Her personal life is also considered radical by many. Our class will be age-appropriate for students within the age range specified, which will require some facts to be abridged. Feel free to explore her works and read more about Frida independently after class to learn more about this astounding artist!
Supply List
Day 1: Students will be painting their project and will need thick art paper or canvas, along with their choice of paint (tempera, acrylic, watercolor or oils). They will also need their rulers and pencils. Day 2: Drawing paper and student's choice of art medium (pastels, colored pencils, charcoal, etc). If they prefer to paint, they will need heavier paper and their painting supplies. Day 3: Collage materials will include construction paper or colored paper in a variety of colors. Alternatively, the student can paint their paper cutouts, but it is easier to purchase the paper in different colors. They will also need glue and scissors. Day 4: Drawing paper and tools (colored pencils, crayons and pastels). We will also be experimenting with the art technique of "frottage", which is like a rubbing. For this, bring along some bumpy and textured items, such as leaves, sandpaper, flat LEGOs, toys, cheese grater, etc. We will use our crayons or pastels to rub over these items with the paper on top.
