DNA is an amazing structure that houses all the information your body needs to make you, you! It is known as the double helix and is said to store all of our genetic information. But, how does it do that? What does DNA look like? In this class, we'll make a model of the DNA strand. To start the class we'll talk about what DNA is, where we find it, what the different parts of the DNA strand are. After we've been introduced to DNA we'll make our paper-based model of the DNA strand. Once our piece of DNA is made we'll then look into how our body can make copies of our DNA. Students will be able to leave this class with a model and an understanding of the basics of DNA.
Learning Goals
Students will:
-build a model of the DNA strand
-identify the different parts of the DNA strand
-understand nucleotide bases and how they pair
-understand how nucleotide bases aid in creating genes

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Jennessa Vullo and I teach a wide range of "middle school" science classes. I am a stay-at-home mom to 3 beautiful boys and LOVE teaching science!
I have a Bachelor's degree in Life Science Education from St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and am a certified teacher in North Carolina. I taught general middle school science in a public school for 8 years. About 4 years ago, I turned into a homeschooling mom who taught preschool during the day, and Adult Basic Education (ABE) Classes at night. After two years of that, I changed my focus to teaching a few online ESL classes to elementary-aged students while still homeschooling my son. However, my interest, desire, and passion lie with the sciences and middle-school-aged students. So, now I am teaching through Outschool!
The biggest question learners have, whether intentional or not, is "Why do I need to know this?" Therefore, I set out to answer that question with every lesson I teach. From online labs to open discussions, we will explore various science topics in a way that allows learners to not only learn the material but also understand why science is so important to their everyday lives. Hopefully, inspiring the next generation of scientists!
I believe through the right type of learning tools and the right teacher relationship, students can understand any topic and succeed. And, as I do with my children, I desire to foster the love of learning so that students become lifelong learners; ready to tackle any challenge life has for them. I look forward to working with both students and parents to create a partnership that helps achieve your family's goals.
