30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this one-time class, students will create a fun Halloween craft to celebrate the holiday of frightening fun soon upon us. Learners will have the choice of which craft they want to do based on the supplies they bring to class, but both will be presented. We will start with instructions on how to do the crafts. Learners can continue painting and cutting while the story is being read to them. Students will listen to me read-a-loud “Splat the Cat and the Pumpkin-Picking Plan” by Rob Scotton. I will share pictures from the book, I will ask questions to check their reading comprehension and I will also discuss different vocabulary words from the book. When the story is over, we will begin with a show n’ tell of their spooky Halloween craft. The crafts will be simple for most children to do but some younger children may require parental assistance when using scissors. *** Feel free to dress up in a costume or some black or orange clothing. *** Supplies: Pumpkin Craft - two paper plates - orange paint - green pipe cleaner (you can omit it or switch it for green paper) - some tape to secure the pipe cleaner - scissors - glue - pencil (or similar) - tea light candle (battery operated) optional Cat Craft - black construction paper - pencil crayons - white or silver gel pen - wiggle eyes or eye stickers - scissors - glue
Learning Goals
Learners will engage in discussion of a story, practice comprehension skills and will be able to be creative as they create a craft following step-by-step directions.
