Class Experience

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to work with your outer space friends from planet Glorb, to help Earthlings with 5 challenges. Over the next five days, prepare to think critically and creatively in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math!
But first, we need to disguise ourselves as Earthlings! Make sure you have your Hologram Hat ready to help us appear human.
In my tentacle - er - I mean, my hand. I hold the latest itinerary from Glorb Council. Please read the information below and click on the day you would like to join your teammates and begin your mission.

Outline for the Five Days of Camp:
-Greeting & Glorb ice breaker (5 minutes) (Don’t forget your hologram hat to appear human.)
-Mission from Glorb Council (10-15 minutes)
	-Introduce the problem
        -Do YOU accept the mission?
-Map Skills: locate the place on earth this problem is happening - beam down there
-Perform Reconnaissance on this area and problem (Reconnaissance is a mission to obtain information by visual observation or other detection methods like virtual field trips, pictures, and videos)
       -Review STEAM protocol
- Perform Challenge in our Top Secret Lab (10-12 minutes)
-Be prepared with all the necessary materials listed below in the 'Learner Supply List' section
-Brainstorm with fellow Glorbs on possible solutions
	-Begin your build!
        -Follow STEAM protocol
-Present (5-10 minutes)
-Each Glorb will share their design, how it works, and how it could solve the problem
-Your fellow Glorbs will offer helpful suggestions and praise when required
-Closing (1-2 minutes)
-Submit your prototype to Glorb Council
-Sign off and rest up for your next mission

*Alert Earthling Parents & Guardians, if you could please share a picture of your Earthling child’s prototype on the classroom page, I will submit any and all pictures to Glorb Council.

With deepest gratitude,
-The Earthling teacher called Ms. Rebeka (I really am an Earthling...NOT an alien captain.)

** TOP SECRET Glorb Information!
STEAM protocol is as follows: Use critical thinking steps like, Ask - to identify a problem, Research - the problem, IMAGINE - possible solutions, PLAN - by selecting a promising solution, CREATE - a prototype, TEST - evaluate your prototype, PRESENT - to your peers, IMPROVE - and redesign if needed.

*** TOP, TOP SECRET Glorb Information!
Challenge One: Repair your ship and launch from the highest mountain on Earth before it's too late! Use science and simple materials to build a structure on Mount Everest that must hold up a toy character on the top for at least 30 seconds.

Challenge Two: NASA's mainframe has fried and the Earthlings need our help to reprogram its computer! Use technology programming and critical thinking to design a structure through coding.

Challenge Three: The largest zoo in Africa is looking to upgrade their largest enclosure, but their top engineer is sick! Use engineering and problem-solving to create a cage that will keep an animal (or wild Earthling) contained. It must include a way to let the animal in and out.

Challenge Four: The Louvre Museum in Paris is filled with precious art that needs restoration. No human hand, or alien tentacle, can touch the work. Use art and creativity to build a structure that allows you to color, but you can NOT touch the markers or paper, and all four markers must be able to color.

Challenge Five: The longest zip line in the world has fallen down. Help the Adventure Park in Puerto Rico make its replacement! Use math and ingenuity to create the longest paper chain with only one piece of 8x10 paper. How long will your chain be?
Learning Goals
Learners will focus on hands-on learning that promotes applied mathematics and science concepts. They will practice learning new content and then applying what they have learned through creative invention challenges. Gain confidence to author with technology, solve real world problems, and design new solutions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, I'm Ms. Rebeka, a life long learner turned teacher! Let me tell you about myself.

I am an educator with the World Awareness Children's Museum located in upstate New York, USA. Downstairs is where all the hands-on, interactive exhibits are. This is where I create and teach Storytime for preschoolers, take elementary aged children on tours around the world - well around the world IN the museum, and design and lead camps for children age 3-12 based on art, exploration, and because I love to read, literature!
Upstairs, is where all the artifacts are stored safely, and I teach virtually. Here, surrounding schools invite me virtually into their classrooms and I get to teach their students about world culture, traditions, and celebrations.

Personally, I am a mom of three teenagers, a homeschool mom, and a homeschool graduate myself. My husband and I are raising our children across from a horse farm, with our cat Ella (who thinks she is a human too), our dog Appa (yes, she is named after the flying bison from The Last Airbender), and our five fancy mice, named Chi Chi, Coco, Louise, Bunny Bo Bo, and Fudge!

I have been a homeschool instructor for 4+ years, but really see myself as a mentor or guide. I like to find children's interest and teach them topics through that interest so they are engaged and invested! I have put together book club discussions for children in both middle school and high school - I DO really love to read.

I have been working with children and their families in some capacity for 11+ years. Within Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, PTA's, to being on the Parent Council with the LARC Community Center for families with children who have Autism, and on the Board of Directors for KKC Cares, who help families work through trauma. Children are truly a passion of mine, and helping to create a space that makes them feel comfortable and confident is one of the reason's I began to teach.

I try to be a teacher that I would have liked, or would like my children to have. Someone who is kind, encouraging, thoughtful, respectful, and wants to make you smile. I still love to learn and research! Spending time with, and teaching children, let's me learn along side them. There are SO many fantastic things about our world and my goal is to share in that discovery. I love to see their faces light up with a new interesting fact, or celebrate a new found knowledge with them!

I hope you will join me in one of my learning adventures!
