Class Experience

Students will learn how to draw objects, in this case, a cylinder, cone, sphere and block, by watching me draw portions of the drawing, a little at a time. I will attach a handout to the classroom description of the line drawing of the objects which they can use as a guide, but they can follow along as I draw, too. I would like them to be able to see my paper as it is filmed over my shoulder. The class will be structured with me drawing what can easily fit into 60 minutes. The first class will be the line drawing of the objects, only. I will emphasize the proportions in that class. This might take the whole 60 minutes, but if it doesn't then I will have them begin to add the shading with their pencil. The second class will be continuing to shade the objects. The third class will be completing the shading of the objects. If the students finish before the class is over I will give them another very short shading project. The nature of a drawing class is that students have different speed levels in which they finish their drawings. I encourage them to be careful and go slowly so as not to make a sloppy drawing, but I encourage them to quicken the pace if it appears they might not finish on time.

Learning Goals

Students will be able to draw a simple object or series of objects that are all assembled in a pleasing composition. They will follow a line drawing, and follow the teacher's guidelines on the proper way to shade the drawing. The student will be able to see the highlights, lowlights, cast shadow and form shadow and be able to shade it accordingly.

Supply List
I can provide my expertise. The Students need to purchase the following materials: 1) Drawing paper. A white drawing paper tablet (found online on Amazon, or dickblick.com or Target) will work great. I prefer 80 lb. weight paper, so I think the paper at Target might be lighter weight, but it's certainly fine if that's all you can get right now. 81/2 x11" or 9x12". Strathmore has a 9x12 60-sheet spiral pad in 64lb. weight at Target for $6.49. Also - "Mellisa and Doug" Drawing pad 50 sheets heavy weight on Amazon for $2.99. Just be careful that it's not too stiff like card stock. 2) A Pencil - Bic #2 mechanical 0.7 pencils from Target are my "go-to" pencils. BIC X-TRA LIFE. A 40 count box is about $10 but you can buy single pencils. Don't get 0.9. Not the x-tra smooth x-tra strong or sparkle...they break too easily. I create significant art using these and they're way cheaper than drawing pencils, but easy, since you don't have to sharpen them. If all you have available are Ticonderoga #2, that's fine. But I will not let the students use the pink eraser on the end of that type of pencil. It smears the drawing and leaves a pink streak. 3) An eraser. White Pearl is fine..Target 3-pack $1.99 4) an Ultra Fine black Sharpie. 2-ct. $1.89 or 4 ct. $3.89 All these things can be found at Target. The students might also wish to use a gray kneaded eraser which can be found on Amazon. 2 X PRISMACOLOR DESIGN Eraser, 1224 Kneaded Rubber Eraser Large, Grey, $5.48. They also might wish to use a blending stump which can be found on Amazon for $5.09 - Mayitr Durable Paper Blending Stump Tortillon Sketch Art Drawing Pens (6pcs). I WILL ALSO PROVIDE A LINE DRAWING FOR THE OBJECTS as a guide.

Teacher expertise and credentials
All of us have a gift to share with others, and this is what I want to share. I started drawing when I was very young and haven't stopped. I love drawing more than anything. I'm also naturally good at teaching. I've been an art teacher for over 18 years, and I've also taught Drama, Photography, Speech and Dance. I've always been really good at explaining things. Plus, I enjoy the students. If you know your son or daughter likes art, I will help them create beautiful projects worthy of framing on the wall, not just curling up on the refrigerator! :)
