Students will learn how to draw objects by watching me draw portions of the drawing, a little at a time. They can follow along. I would like them to be able to see my paper as it is filmed over my shoulder. The class will be structured with me drawing what can easily fit into 60 minutes. In this class I will draw a variety of fish and sea plants and the students will follow along with me to create a similar artwork. During this section I have decided to demonstrate the simple beginning...
Students will be able to draw a simple object or series of objects that are all assembled in a pleasing composition. They will follow a line drawing, and follow the teacher's guidelines on the proper way to color the drawing. We will begin classes with colored pencils, but add more sophisticated media for color as the student progresses in ability. I am very particular with the way students complete their projects. They must be neat and complete.
All of us have a gift to share with others, and this is what I want to share. I started drawing when I was very young and haven't stopped. I love drawing more than anything. I'm also naturally good at teaching. I've been an art teacher for over 18 years, and I've also taught Drama, Photography, Speech and Dance. I've always been really good at explaining things. Plus, I enjoy the students. If you know your son or daughter likes art, I will help them create beautiful projects worthy of framing on the wall, not just curling up on the refrigerator! :)
The only homework I might assign will be listed here. Most of the classes will not require homework. I will expect the students to complete the drawing and coloring of the pieces during class time. (If they try to finish the projects at home, I cannot help them with their careful application of color and perspective - plus if there is a pro artist in the house, I'll never know if the student actually learned the project or had "Uncle Jim" help him out. :)
I can provide my expertise. In ADDITION TO THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS, THE STUDENTS WILL NEED A STUDENT-GRADE TRAY OF WATERCOLORS, WATERCOLOR PAPER AND A SMALL WATERCOLOR BRUSH. All of these can be found on Target's website. (We will use watercolor, depending on the students' ages and ability, as this project is pretty in watercolor, too). But in case the student cannot use watercolor for any reason, the following materials will be needed: A Pencil - Bic #2 mechanical 0.7 pencils from Target are my "go-to" pencils. BIC X-TRA LIFE. A 40 count box is about $10 but you can buy single pencils. Don't get 0.9. Not the x-tra smooth x-tra strong or sparkle...they break too easily. I create significant art using these and they're way cheaper than drawing pencils, but easy, since you don't have to sharpen them. If all you have available are Ticonderoga #2, that's fine. But I will not let the students use the pink eraser on the end of that type of pencil. It smears the drawing and leaves a pink streak. An eraser. "White Pearl" is fine..Target 3-pack $1.99 An Ultra Fine black Sharpie. 2-ct. $1.89 or 4 ct. $3.89 All these things can be found at Target. If they wish to use gel pens to add detail at the end the best gel pen is Uniball Signo found on Amazon. They sell white, silver and gold, and sometimes they feature them in packs of 3 or 6.
I will look at all the students' work during class and assess them along the way. As long as the student tries his or her best and does neat, complete work, he or she will be successful!
4 hours per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
