Miss Margie's Art - Learn to Draw a Cats

Two one hour sessions creating a drawing of cats, with sharpie, and colored pencils. This is a DRAWING lesson, not a class where learners "free draw" to pass the time. Following the instruction will improve "eye to hand" and design skills.

Class Experience

Students will learn how to draw objects, in this case, two cats, by watching me draw portions of the drawing, a little at a time. They can follow along. I would like them to be able to see my paper as it is filmed over my shoulder. The class will be structured with me drawing what can easily fit into 60 minutes. We will draw or color, one class at a time, and take two classes on one project. The first class will be drawing only, then possibly adding sharpie to outline. The students will follow along with me as I draw the objects and all the decorations on them. This might take the whole 60 minutes, but if it doesn't then I will have them begin to add the sharpie over their pencil lines. The second class will be finishing up the sharpie and adding colored pencil to finish the cats! The nature of a drawing class is that students have different speed levels in which they finish their drawings. I encourage them to be careful and go slowly so as not to make a sloppy drawing, but I encourage them to quicken the pace if it appears they might not finish on time.

Learning Goals

Students will be able to draw a simple object or series of objects that are all assembled in a pleasing composition. They will follow a line drawing, and follow the teacher's guidelines on the proper way to color the drawing. We will begin classes with colored pencils, but add more sophisticated media for color as the student progresses in ability. I am very particular with the way students complete their projects. They must be neat and complete.

Supply List
I can provide my expertise. The Students need to purchase the following materials: A Pencil - Bic #2 mechanical 0.7 pencils from Target are my "go-to" pencils. BIC X-TRA LIFE. A 40 count box is about $10 but you can buy single pencils. Don't get 0.9. Not the x-tra smooth x-tra strong or sparkle...they break too easily. I create significant art using these and they're way cheaper than drawing pencils, but easy, since you don't have to sharpen them. If all you have available are Ticonderoga #2, that's fine. But I will not let the students use the pink eraser on the end of that type of pencil. It smears the drawing and leaves a pink streak. An eraser. White Pearl is fine..Target 3-pack $1.99. An ULTRA FINE BLACK SHARPIE. 2-ct. $1.89 or 4 ct. $3.89 All these things can be found at Target. If the student wishes to use GEL PENS, the best is Uniball Signo available on Amazon, as well. Colored Pencils - Prismacolor are the best for blending, but Crayola wor well too. Both are available on Amazon...and Crayola can be found almost anywhere.

Teacher expertise and credentials
All of us have a gift to share with others, and this is what I want to share. I started drawing when I was very young and haven't stopped. I love drawing more than anything. I'm also naturally good at teaching. I've been an art teacher for over 18 years, and I've also taught Drama, Photography, Speech and Dance. I've always been really good at explaining things. Plus, I enjoy the students. If you know your son or daughter likes art, I will help them create beautiful projects worthy of framing on the wall, not just curling up on the refrigerator! :)
