Why don't the members of the Fairy Tail Guild have an unlimited supply of magic? Why is it that magic always has a cost in Anime? It's because of Chemistry. Find the answers to these questions and the chemistry behind them in this class!

Class experience

US Grade 7 - 10
At the end of this Multi-Day class, learners will possess the skills to:

LESSON 1: CONTEXT
1. Outline the historical development of chemistry
2. Provide examples of the importance of chemistry in everyday life
3. Describe the scientific method
4. Differentiate among hypotheses, theories, and laws
5. Provide examples illustrating macroscopic, microscopic, and symbolic domains

LESSON 2: MATTER
1. Describe the basic properties of each physical state of matter: solid, liquid, and gas
2. Distinguish between mass and weight
3. Apply the law of conservation of matter
4. Classify matter as an element, compound, homogeneous mixture, or heterogeneous mixture with regard to its physical state and composition
5. Define and give examples of atoms and molecules

LESSON 3: PROPERTIES
1. Identify properties of and changes in matter as physical or chemical
2. Identify properties of matter as extensive or intensive

LESSON 4: MEASUREMENTS
1. Explain the process of measurement
2. Identify the three basic parts of a quantity
3. Describe the properties and units of length, mass, volume, density, temperature, and time
4. Perform basic unit calculations and conversions in the metric and other unit systems

LESSON 5: SIGNIFICANT FIGURES
1. Define accuracy and precision
2. Distinguish exact and uncertain numbers
3. Correctly represent uncertainty in quantities using significant figures
4. Apply proper rounding rules to computed quantities

LESSON 6: DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS
1. Explain the dimensional analysis (factor label) approach to mathematical calculations involving quantities
2. Use dimensional analysis to carry out unit conversions for a given property and computations involving two or more properties
I have a bachelor’s degree in science in education as well as 1 year of formal teaching experience.
Homework Offered
Learners will be provided with a Unit Handout that includes definitions discussed during the live lesson and additional practice problems. Learners are encouraged to complete the practice problems before the following lesson and utilize the classroom chat to ask questions.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Learners will be informally assessed through their ability to guide me through various examples and activities during the live lessons. Activities include: LESSON 1: Padlet Activity that focuses on using the Scientific Method LESSON 2: Google Forms knowledge check that focuses on concepts learned in Lessons 1 & 2 LESSON 3: Gimkit activity that focuses on identifying properties of matter. LESSON 4: Density Simulation Lab provided by Simbucket
Grades Offered
1. A notebook and pencil for note taking
2. Calculator
3. Unit 1 Handout (provided)
