Miss Forester’s Story Time: “The Colors of Us” and Drawing a Self-Portrait

It’s story time with Miss Forester as we read a book about how we are all different shades of beautiful colors. Afterwards I will guide your child how to draw a picture of themselves as we talk about the different parts of our face.

Class Experience

I am a certified teacher and have taught preschool for the past 14 years. Two of my favorite parts of being a preschool teacher is the interaction of storytelling and guided drawing lessons. For this class, it will be like a mini preschool circle time as I read The Color of Us book to them, we will be discussing together how we are different (skin tones) and how we are the same (feelings, etc.). After our story time, it will be drawing time as your child will learn more about drawing a picture of their face as we talk about the different parts of a face (eyes, nose, mouth, ears, hair). We will also talk about which way the paper needs to go (long ways side to to side is "hot dog" style and long ways up and down is "hamburger" style, different colors and different ways to draw lines with crayons.

Learning Goals

Your child will become more familiar with the parts of their face and realize we are all different beautiful shades of colors.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a certified teacher who has taught two years of 4th grade, two years of 3rd grade and I've been a preschool teacher for 14 years. Two of my most favorite parts of being a preschool teacher have been storytime and guided drawing lessons with my three and four year olds. I enjoy bringing my students into each story by asking questions, using different voices and sound effects. I want to show my students how fun and exciting reading can be. At preschool ages of 3 to 6 years old, their creativity is so sweet and every picture they draw will not look exactly like mine, but drawing is such a stepping stone to other things. Through guided drawing, students will learn colors, following directions, creativity, and appreciation of art through crayons. I am a kid at heart who loves to laugh and collect vintage Fisher Price sets, toys and Fisher Price Little People.
