Minibeasts! Amazing Arachnids
We will learn, draw, play games, and sing about arachnids, including spiders, scorpions, and solifugids and find out how they are different from insects. Students will also get to see a LIVE tarantula! (Preschool and kindergarten science, zoology, biology, and animal anatomy.)
What's included
4 live meetings
2 hrs 40 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In each class we will focus on arachnids (spiders, scorpions, horseshoe crabs, and more). We will watch videos and look at pictures to learn how they move, observe them catching and eating prey, discuss their physical characteristics, and talk about where they live. We will compare and contrast arachnids and insects and talk about why the horseshoe crab is an arachnid, not a crustacean. Learners will be encouraged to share stories and observations about the different creatures we study and to send in pictures of arachnids or any other cool creatures they see during the week for show and tell. We will also be singing, dancing, drawing, and playing games to help retain what we are learning. I encourage questions, sharing, singing, and dancing during class and I try not to mute students ( please try to find your learner a place where there won't be too much background noise, if possible, because I really enjoy hearing what they have to say). Week 1:What is an arachnid? Week 2:Spiders Week 3:Scorpions Week 4:Ticks, mites, and solifuges

Parental Guidance
There will be videos and photos of spiders and other arachnids catching and eating prey. Nothing too graphic, but I feel parents should be aware that we will discuss what and how arachnids eat and what eats them.
Supply List
Blank paper and drawing materials (markers, crayons, or colored pencils).
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Ginny Strum (Ms. Ginny) and I teach preschool and early elementary science on Outschool. I have a B.S. in zoology from NCSU and I also have my NC Early Childhood Education Credentials and Preschool Teaching Certification and am currently pursuing a specialization in entomology. Offline, I teach preschool as well as after school and summer art and science classes to ages 3-13. I home-schooled my own children from kindergarten all the way through high school, participating and teaching in many co-ops along the way. I have been working professionally with animals for over thirty years including participating in the Cumberland Island Bobcat Reintroduction Project, and working at the NC Zoo Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Carolina Tiger Rescue, and Wake County After Hours Emergency Veterinary Services. I think the enthusiasm of a teacher for their subject is vital to students' eagerness to learn and that is why I will only teach subjects I am truly passionate about here on Outschool.
