Students will start building their foundational muscle memory for 8 traditional yoga asanas/poses while learning about the ancient characters who inspired them. They will discover that they can do yoga, and practicing is a whole lot of fun!
I have been practicing yoga for more than 5 years, and I became certified as a trauma-informed yoga teacher in 2018. I have been working with children and teens in a wide range of capacities for around 20 years. While we will talk about stories from Hindu mythology in these classes, this camp is not intended as a study of the religion. This is a story-based yoga camp, inspired by classic literature and the characters for which the yoga asanas are named.
Mini yogis will make a yoga camp craft based on the options I will provide during the Opening Ceremony (Day 1), OR each learner is free to shape a yoga-themed craft of their own choosing—expressing your own unique self is key to yoga practice! The craft need only take an hour or two to make, unless a student wishes to dedicate more time to its creation.
Yogis should have an open area of the floor or ground with enough space to lie down and spread out, and it's wise to have water within reach. Nothing else is required, although blankets; pillows; and a strap, scarf, or long towel may be beneficial, and sometimes we may practice near a wall to encourage a different experience of the poses. Learners will also need "standard" craft supplies for the yoga camp craft; options should be covered by whatever your family has on hand, but some possibilities include: paper, crayons, markers, paint, pipe cleaners, buttons, fabric, etc.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Please reach out to me if this is your child's first time practicing yoga and/or if he or she (or you) has any concerns of which you would like me to be aware. I have been trained to teach yoga so that anyone who wishes to participate will reap its benefits, and I offer modifications and advancements for the poses throughout class. Yoga truly is for everyone! If you have any questions or are concerned about the suitability of a yoga practice for your student, it's best to confirm with a doctor that this style of physical activity is safe. Parental assistance is recommended for the yoga camp craft, particularly if your learner's creation requires the use of scissors, pipe cleaners, or anything sharp.
