In this 6-week course learners will learn the letter names of the piano keys and play simple songs with both hands. Learners will start by finding notes F and C using the patterns on the keyboard. Then, learners will find all the notes in the musical alphabet. Throughout the course, learners will identify and demonstrate stepping and skipping while playing simple songs with quarter notes, half notes and whole notes. Learners will also be introduced to barlines as they play songs in sets of 3 beats and sets of 4 beats. All classes will follow a similar structure. We will begin with a review of previous material and concepts. Learners may volunteer to play songs from the previous week's assignment. New material will be presented, practiced on mute, and voluntarily performed for the class. Simple "games" will be incorporated throughout the course to promote learner engagement. All lessons are based on a downloadable book that the teacher has purchased and has permission to share to her students only. Listed below is an outline for the course concepts. The pacing of the course may be adjusted as needed. Week 1 Musical Alphabet Finding Notes F and C Week 2 Stepping and Skipping Week 3 Half Notes Week 4 Whole Notes Week 5 Barlines Week 6 Review Game, Final Performances Most learners will need assistance at this age. The class will practice on mute and unmute to play for the class or answer questions. It would be helpful if learners know numbers 1-5 and letters A-G. There are several activity sheets that require circling, tracing or writing numbers 1-5 and letters A-G.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Texas Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Hello! My name is Mrs. McArthur and I teach MUSIC! I am a Texas certified all-level music teacher with 29 years of teaching experience, 26 years in public schools and 3 years online and homeschool experience. I have taught preschool through eighth grade General Music and Choir classes. I received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education with an emphasis in vocal music from Oklahoma Baptist University.
I believe that every learner can make music! Learners need a variety of experiences to learn music skills, including visual, aural and kinesthetic. Given sequential steps, students can achieve well beyond the expectations. When creativity is modeled, learners discover that making mistakes improves music. Learners need opportunities to be creative with choices so they can create on their own terms and interests. By making connections to science, social studies, math and beyond, students learn that subjects don’t exist in isolation. Music is the universal language and learners deserve a chance to explore the world through a musical lens!
