Class Experience

Mermaids, Dragons, Unicorns---what could be more epic?! Let's create some fantastic friends together!
We'll practice some basic techniques for drawing, building and sculpting together. By learning to recognize the main shapes and features of some of our favorite imaginary creatures, students will build their confidence and ability to recreate any animal--real or imagined.
We'll also spend some time learning a little about the history and special features of each daily creature. Camp time will also include a little show-and-tell, and a story, game or movement activity that relates to the character we are creating that day.
The camp schedule is as follows:
Day 1: Mermaids (sculpt)
Day 2: Dragons (build)
Day 3: Unicorns (draw)

In my popular STEM classes here on Outschool, I often find that young learners can be hesitant to recreate the dinosaurs or other animals we are learning about because they don't know where to begin. I will sometimes build or draw in class with them to show them how to look at the basic shapes of the animal or dinosaur, how to roll out the playdough to create necks, legs and tails, or how to implement the square-ish nature of LEGO or other building blocks to create 3-D models of their favorite creatures. This camp would be a wonderful supplement to any of those courses, or as a stand-alone experience for any early learner who wants to explore and create the world of magical beings.

This is an introductory course designed especially for preK/K/1st grade, primary-school learners. In addition to learning a bit about our featured mythical characters and building, drawing and sculpting together, your young learner will also practice sharing and presentation skills, following directions, learning to ask questions or ask for help, as well as practicing shape recognition and observation skills.

Because this class is for 4-7 year olds, I encourage parents to remain available during class to help with technical or learning issues whenever possible (not mandatory)--especially with our youngest learners. You may not remain on-camera per Outschool policy, but it is helpful if you can remain close by during class. I find this creates the best experience for the families who have taken my classes.

Access to a printer is required. Please message me for accommodation ideas if you do not have a printer or have any other special requests or concerns about your learner, class content, or supplies.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to identify basic shapes and features of selected mythical characters. Students will learn techniques for recreating those imaginary creatures on paper (drawing), with building blocks, and with clay or playdough. Students will learn introductory facts and stories about the featured creatures, and will practice observation skills as we examine those magical beings for their main features and shapes. Students will practice following directions, asking questions, and presentation skills.

I'm so excited to share my love of creating and especially MERMAIDS, DRAGONS and UNICORNS with you! I've been teaching STEAM and art classes through fun, engaging topics like these to preschool through middle school for 7 years through an independent STEAM education company, as well as at a local arts facility. I'm really looking forward to connecting with new students here on Outschool. Not only will we be exercising our imaginations and learning about mythical creatures (yay!)--but we'll sneak in some colors, shapes, comparing and contrasting, observation, art skills and more--all things that preK, kindergartners and 1st graders love to learn and practice!
