This is a fun way to introduce the challenge of Sudoku to kids who already like Minecraft. A Sudoku is a pencil and paper puzzle originally from Japan. A typical challenge is to fit the numbers 1-9 into a grid without repeating any numbers in a row or column. There is only one solution and logic is used to find the correct placement of the numbers. In my class, I will teach a basic understanding of the game and lead examples how to solve the puzzles. We will use beginner puzzles that use the numbers 1-4 and then the numbers 1-6. We will not be teaching the "regular" Sudoku of 9x9 grids. To make it Minecraft themed, I will use a Zoom background from the game. I will introduce each puzzle as if we are engaged with a battle with one of the types of creatures from the game. We will have light discussion about playing Minecraft. No actual Minecraft knowledge is necessary and we will not be playing any Minecraft during the class. The class structure: 1) Welcome with introductions, behavior expectations, and a Minecraft question 2) Teach how to solve Sudoku puzzles from start to finish 3) Provide additional puzzles. I will continue to teach how to solve them from start to finish. Students also have the option to work on their own and ask questions for help when needed 4) Finish with a discussion of strategies we use After class, I provide a link for additional puzzles for students to continue to solve after class is over. The links include 4x4, 6x6, and 9x9 puzzles. It is necessary to print the puzzles to participate in class. I will send the puzzles about one hour before class starts.
