Minecraft ASL Show and Sign Club (American Sign Language)

This weekly class provides a forum for learners to put the ASL they’ve learned into action and interact with others while practicing ASL. It’s Minecraft, it’s social, it’s ASL!

Class Experience

What good is learning a language you don't use? Has your ASL learner been taking classes for months, even years, and it just feels like learning a different set of signs each time?

I’ve seen first hand how much kids LOVE talking about Minecraft.  Here is a chance to use that excitement for a subject to practice ASL skills. This class gives learners a social space to meet others, talk about their favorite game, and work on their signing.

The topic for each week's class will be dictated by what comes up as each learner shows off their Minecraft toys or items, talks about their latest build, or the Minecraft tips they want to share. Each learner will have time set aside every week to show-and-sign or ask sign language questions. I will be there each step of the way to help them sign what they are trying to communicate or provide feedback to help them keep progressing in the language.

As time permits and as it relates to the class each week will also have activities, challenges, or games in ASL. A brief portion of each weeks class will be presented in full ASL with no voicing in order for learners to practice their receptive signing skills.

Learners who have already started to build up some ASL vocabulary will find the weekly class most enjoyable. However, learners of all levels are welcome to join as teacher feedback will be adjusted to each student accordingly.

I hope to see you signing along with us soon!

** We will not actually be playing Minecraft in this class.
Learning Goals
The learning goal of this class will be to encourage learners tell stories and describe things in ASL. Learning signs will be part of this class but learning how to communicate and describe is a goal of this class. The most important goal is to have fun signing!

Hello! I’m so excited for the opportunity to teach here at outschool. I have over 20 years of teaching experience. Much of my time as a volunteer teacher. I have a BA of education as well as a TESOL certificate. I have been learning and teaching American Sign Language since 2005. I spend many hours a week using and teaching others including my 5 year old son in ASL. I also have been working as an ESL teacher for over 2 years now.

I am passionate about teaching because education is so important and rewarding. Since I believe learning should be fun and challenging I like to use lots of pictures, games and activities. This really keeps the class moving and engaging.

Sign language is a huge part of my life and I enjoy teaching it. I thought it would be exciting to create classes so that kids would have fun and want to jump right in to learning sign language.

I love outdoors. We spend as much time as possible outside. Camping, hiking you name it we love it. Hope to meet you all soon!
