1 hour per week. Students may be tasked with completing written reflections individually. These tasks will take no more than ten minutes to complete.Class Experience
Students will work to help identify areas with students struggle with social-emotional barriers that make it difficult for them to focus and learn. Each module will provide students will proven strategies to help foster grit, self-discovery, and more. This course will provide the dedicated time, and support students need to build resilience. Team building activities, opportunities for written reflection, and more will shape this course. We will focus on: Developing Problem solving skills Self-regulation practices Increasing motivation Self-actualization/Confidence building Resolving conflicts Self-reflection/Evaluating consequences of decisions This course will intertwine literary analysis strategies as students read excerpts from novels, news articles, and multimedia resources such as videos and movies to help bridge the connection between SEL and literary analysis. This will help give students tangible examples of characters and individuals they can consider an example. Below are the weekly topics that we will cover: Week 1: Background information on Social Emotional Learning & Mindsets & Goal setting Week 2: Self-Actualization & Regulation of thoughts, actions, and self Week 3: Managing Relationships & Social Conflict, Week 4: Gratitude and a state of calm

Students will learn how to utilize social-emotional learning competencies and mindfulness initiatives to help develop self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work, and life success.

Parental Guidance
In this course, the instructor will screen share scenes from movies rated PG and PG 13 that include Some Mild Language/Bullying/Thematic Elements. The movies that we will watch clips from include: Wonder, Frozen, Kung Fu Panda, Wreck it Ralph, Ralph Breaks the Internet, The Karate Kid, the Star Wars Saga, scenes from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. YouTube will be used as the teacher screen shares to display video clips for the class to view whole group. These clips include guided breathing tutorials, episodes from series such as ClassDojo Mindfulness series and Be Kind public service announcements.
Use of the platform Canva will be utilized to create digital resources and students will need to register to create an account with the platform. Canva will be used for students to practice design thinking as they will work to create original designs to be apart of the Mindfulness Learning Portfolios. As we progress through the course, students will have opportunities to create presentations, flyers, greeting cards, and planners to help bring their learning to life.
Kahoot, Gimkit, and Nearpod will be used an interactive tools to help with the understanding of newly taught concepts, promote collaboration and interactivity. Kahoot, Gimkit, and Nearpod will be used to answer multiple choice questions, complete discussion board questions, vote on polls, facilitate instruction of the lesson via interactive slideshows, and to complete short writing tasks. Students will need to create an account for Kahoot, Gimkit, and Nearpod.
