Mindful Astronomy: The Solar System on a Rope (Inclusive Astronomy)

In this STEAM inclusive class, kids will make their own scale model of the Solar System. We will use mindfulness techniques to create this model and later we will travel together on our model through the Solar System, visiting every planet.

Mindful Astronomy is an approach to astronomy that includes as many senses as possible in the process of learning. In this particular Mindful Astronomy class, we will create a personalized model in terms of distances of the Solar System. Because students are creating their own scale model, they are being introduced to mathematical concepts in a hands-on way.

During the first half of the class, we will be creating our Solar System on a rope. During the second part of the class, we will be traveling together, using our hands, and our rope, through the Solar System on a magical trip, stopping in each planet and learning about it. It is possible that the younger learners might need support from an adult to make te knots in their ropes.

The entire class is based on experience and discussions. I will not be sharing my screen or using a power point. Each student should bring a non stretchable rope of at least 10 feet long (3 meters long). No previous knowledge of astronomy is required. Every Lerner is welcome in this class because they will all benefit from it. Blind kids are particularly encouraged to participate since this class does not use any visuals, but a lot of tangible experiences.
