Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
This is a workshop style class. Over the four weeks students will learn what mind mapping is, why it works, and how to use it to improve their learning and memory. Students will use colors, drawings, and words to make their version of the mind map unique to them. Students will post their mind maps in the classroom after the lesson. Students will comment on each other's mind maps, and learn to make constructive suggestions to others. Students will create four different mind maps. Each week includes 5-15 minutes of instructional video as a guide to mind mapping. Some weeks will also include an additional mind mapping walk through video and readings. Week 1: Students will learn the structure of mind maps and will create a mind map to plan their dream birthday party! They will be given a sample mind map structure, and an example from the teacher, but are encouraged to use their creativity to make their mind map their own. Week 2: Students will learn how to put information from an article or video into a mind map. In this lesson students will create a mind map based on an article about rhinos. The teacher will walk the students through this mind map and how to format it. Students will then create a mind map on an animal of their choosing. Week 3: Students will create a before and after mind map about the environment. In this class students will create a "before" mind map that includes facts that they already know about the environment. They will then watch a video about the environment and will create a second mind map about it including all of the new things they have learned. Week 4: Students will mind map their homework! Students will be introduced to the "Who, what, when, where, why, how" mind map. They will choose something they have learned in their school/ on Outschool (this is really useful if they are studying for a test). They will take a recording and post it in the classroom, using their mind map to teach the class about the topic they have chosen! I recommend setting aside 45 min- 1 hour to complete this class each week.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Taking psychology completely changed my own approach to learning, and I was 19 years old when I took my first psychology class! I want to help children strengthen their brain so they don't have to wait so long to learn the best way to learn. I studied Child and Youth Studies at University, and took every psychology elective that I could fit in my schedule. I have remained fascinated with the brain, and I hope my students will feel the same way!
