Mighty Minds: A Spot of Creativity

In this 5 week course, we will read books by Diane Alber that inspire creativity, cover comprehension skills, brainstorm ideas, and share ideas and creations with one another!

Class Experience

In this class, we will explore creativity! Creative and critical thinking skills are essential for being successful, 21st century learners! We will read a fun book each week, share ideas, discuss age appropriate math and English language arts concepts. Students will be given the opportunity to share their creations each week.

Week 1: 
We will read A Little Spot of Creativity, by Diane Alber. Throughout this book, we will discuss what it means to be creative, how to be creative, and challenge ourselves with a fun task!
--Materials: none

Week 2:
We will read I'm Not Just a Scribble, by Diane Alber. Throughout this book, we will see how a little scribble can be so much more than a simple scribble! Additionally, this story shares a beautiful opportunity to discuss acceptance! We will end with a special challenge!
--Materials: paper and drawing materials as desired

Week 3: We will read Spots, by Diane Alber. Throughout this book, we will discuss adjectives, synonyms, and antonyms, all while exploring spots in things all around us! Students will be tasked with their own dot creation. 
--Materials: Choose one of these to make a dot creation on paper: bingo dot markers, circle stickers (like garage sale stickers), cut circles of paper with scissors. Any of these should be accessible at a dollar store.

Week 4: We will read Snippets, by Diane Alber. Throughout this story will discuss shapes and attributes. Additionally, we will discuss kindness and how characters change in books.
--Materials: a few pieces of colored paper, scissors, and glue

Week 5: We will read Sticks, by Diane Alber. Throughout this story, we will follow the journey of a little stick and discuss courage. We will explore creative uses for sticks and students will be tasked with a fun challenge.
--Materials: small sticks, twigs, or popsicle sticks/tongue depressors and glue, tape, or yarn to attach them
