In this course learners will plan, draft, write, and revise a literary five-paragraph essay. Learners will learn close reading strategies, and write an essay on a character in the story based on evidence they gathered while reading. I use short, familiar stories to teach literary analysis because when we are learning complex skills like analyzing a text and putting that analysis into writing learners need not be burdened with heavy, complex texts. This class is taught in English.
Learners will practice the following skills: reading a text analytically, annotating a text, reading a text for different arguments, organizing an argument, proving a claim using CSER (claim, support, evidence, reasoning), finding supporting evidence, structuring an argument essay, how to give productive feedback, and how to read their text with an eye for revision and editing.
I have a Master's of Education degree and I am a certified teacher with over ten years experience in education. I am certified in K-6 elementary education, 7-12 social studies education, 7-12 language arts education, and K-12 Reading education.
Learners may need to work on reading and or writing outside of class.

I will give learners informal, verbal feedback, and targeted, written feedback throughout the course. Learners will also engage in productive, positive, peer feedback.

We will use several public domain short stories, such as 'The Three Little Pigs' (our mentor text). Learners will self select stories from several options.
