Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
This is the SECOND semester of this course. Students must complete the first semester to enroll.

The lessons in this course will teach creative writing and report writing using IEW Structure and Style. Structure teaches students how to organize their thoughts before they write. Style teaches students how to engage the reader with literary devices called dress-ups and decorations in IEW. 

This class will use Outschool to upload all homework and receive feedback and grades. Each week, the content covered in the video lesson is previewed and opportunities for students to share their work with peers are provided.

The following units will be covered in this class:

➡Weeks 1-4
Unit 6: Summarizing Multiple References
The goal of Unit 6 is for students to be able to use multiple references, take outline notes on a specific topic from each reference and to fuse and write a summary from the fused outline. The skill of writing solid topic and conclusion sentences is also reinforced in this unit.
Week 1 - Troglobites Report
Activity: Students share parts of their papers and receive peer feedback. Discuss author spotlight.
Week 2 - Amelia Earhart Report
Activity: Students share parts of their papers and receive peer feedback. Discuss author spotlight.
Weeks 3 & 4 - A Historical Person on Choice
Activity: Students share parts of their papers and receive peer feedback. Group Kahoot review game.

Unit 7: Inventive Writing
The goal of Unit 7 is to give students a structure to use from prompt-based writing assignments. It also teaches the use of an introduction and conclusion in a five-paragraph composition.
Week 5 - A Subject of Your Choice
Activity: Students share parts of their papers and receive peer feedback. Discuss author spotlight.
Week 6 & 7 - A Place of Your Choice
Activity: Students share parts of their papers and receive peer feedback. Discuss author spotlight.
Week 8 - Writing a Letter
Activity: Students share parts of their papers and receive peer feedback. Group Kahoot review game.

➡Weeks 9 - 11
Unit 8: Formal Essay Model
The goal of Unit 8 is to provide a foundation for university writing and research assignments. It teaches the proper structure for formal essays of five or more paragraphs.
Weeks 9 & 10 - Formal Research Paper on Plastic
Activity: Students share parts of their papers and receive peer feedback. Discuss author spotlight.
Week 11 - Formal Research Paper on Oceania
Activity: Students share parts of their papers and receive peer feedback. Group Kahoot review game.

➡Weeks 12- 15
Unit 9: Formal Critique
The goal of Unit 9 is to teach a solid structure for book reports, reviews, and critiques. Students will develop a critique vocabulary, which aids in literary analysis.
Week 12 & 13 - Rikki-Tikki-Tavi Critique
Activity - Students will work on a literary analysis response. Students will share parts of their critiques and receive peer feedback.
Week 14 - Casey at the Bat Critique
Activity - Students will work on a poetry analysis response. Students will share parts of their critiques and receive peer feedback.
Week 15 - Timed Essay
Activity: Students share parts of their papers and receive peer feedback. Group Kahoot review game.

The following stylistic techniques will be covered:

Students who take online classes with Mrs. Brown benefit in four ways:

1.  With engaging instruction from a certified IEW instructor, students receive support that reinforces and provides added insight into the video instruction.
2.  Through the classes, students benefit from lively interaction with other students while receiving direction and accountability for composition assignments.
3. Learners will interact with the instructor and each other through videos, games, slides, video clips, and classroom discussion.
4.  Perhaps most importantly, students receive timely and helpful feedback on every written composition they submit.
