Middle School Writing Class: Paragraph, and Essays Ages 10-14

Students will learn how to write a simple paragraph and then the writing process for a full essay.

Class Experience

Lesson Structure:
1. Warmup sentences/ class review 10 minutes
2. Students will sit and participate in a short lecture while taking notes 30 minutes 
3. Students group/independent practice 10 minutes 
4. Class share/wrap up 10 minutes 

Week One:
Lesson One: 
Warm Up: 
Introduce yourself 10 minutes
Lecture:
Teach Yummy Paragraph Formula
Slides 1-10 30 minutes
Activity Independent: Slides 9-10 ten minutes
Wrap Up/Questions 10 minutes
Take Away/Exit Ticket: What is the main thing you learned today/Send Questions
Homework: Pick a favorite food to write a paragraph about, follow the basic structure/Send Questions to teacher email

Lesson Two:
Warm Up: Questions
Share your topic and why you chose it 10 minutes? Review last lesson. 
Lecture:
Teach Yummy Paragraph Formula
Slides 11-20 30 minutes 
Group Activity: Slide 20, Identify the different “toppings” 
Take Away/Exit Ticket: 
List the toppings/Send Questions
Homework: 
Brainstorm ideas for toppings/Send questions to teacher email


Week Two:

Lesson Three: 
Warm Up Review: Questions/What are the toppings for, how can they be used?
Lecture: Finish Paragraph formula
Slides 21-27
Individual Activity: Quiz and class corrections./Put into Breakrooms Help One Paragraph/Corrections.

Lesson Four:
Lesson: Put into Breakrooms Help One Paragraph/Corrections. 
Homework: Finish paragraph to turn in to Google Docs


Week Three: 

Lesson Five/Six:
Lesson: Share paragraphs aloud/Class gives positive and constructive criticism.
Take Away: Review section 

Lesson Seven:
Lesson: The Writing Process Slideshow 1-7
Class Activity: Steps Scramble: Class put the steps back in order
Homework: Send in any questions to teacher email to be answered in next class warmup


Week Four

Lesson Eight: 
Warmup: Answer student homework questions/Review Steps
Lesson: Essay Writing Slide Show 1-5, assign prompt for narrative essay: Write about the person who has influenced your life the most and how they've impacted your life: it can be a family member, a teacher, a coach, etc.
Homework: Send questions to teacher email, begin prewriting/brainstorming ideas for your topic

Lesson Nine: 
Warmup: Questions for the teacher
Lesson: Essay Writing Slide Show 6-10
Class Activity: Quick Quiz over vocab in powerpoint
Homework: Questions for teacher/ begin a rough draft


Week Five

Lesson 10:
Warm Up: Questions for teacher/Review Writing Process
Lesson: Analyze the essay The Great Paw Paw over parts of a narrative essay: prompt, thesis statement, purpose, audience, body, conclusion etc
Homework: Complete rough draft

Lesson 11:
Lesson: In class work on revising essay with partners or alone. Teacher will go around to students and give on on one help. 
Homework: Complete revising essay


Week Six: 

Lesson 12:
Lesson: Students get with partners or alone and help each other edit essays. Teacher will go to each group and offer help and advice. 
Homework: Complete essay and turn in for publishing 

Lesson 13:
Lesson: Students will read their essays aloud for class critique. 3 positives and one constructive critique 
Closure: Review course material

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to write a paragraph using the "Yummy Paragraph" format. Once mastered students will move on to learning the writing process and practice and master writing full one-page essays.

I am offering this class for students who are learning paragraph learning for the first time or need extra small group tutoring. These skills will prepare students who might be enrolled in the public school system and are preparing for the 7th-grade writing STAAR test.
