Class Experience

*You can join this class at any point! Each week we will read a new short story, and you will not need additional background information from the other weeks!*

This class is aimed at avid and passionate readers who love scary stories, BUT I think even reluctant readers will love my selections and will help foster a love for reading.

Each class will have a prewriting journal prompt or discussion, short mini lesson for a story element, read aloud of the story, post-reading journal questions and discussion. We will end each class with an argumentative/opinion writing or discussion task (example: What do you think Mr. White's last wish was? What door do you think the princess chose and why?) These are captivating stories and we will have fun discussions about them. Some classes will be more reading than discussion and vice versa depending on the length of the story.

Week of March 1st: "The Monkey's Paw" + Point of View
Discussion/writing prompt: How did Mr. and Mrs. White view the final scene differently?

Week of March 8th: "The Sniper" + Imagery and Setting
Discussion/writing prompt: How does the story's setting impact the resolution of the story?

Week of March 15th: "The Cask of Amontillado" + Figurative Language pt. 2
Writing assignment: What is the unknown insult?

Week of March 22nd: "The Most Dangerous Game" + Figurative Language
Discussion/writing assignment: Figurative language scavenger hunt

Week of March 29th: "The Lady or the Tiger?" + Conflict
Discussion/writing assignment: Argue which door the princess chose and why

**NO CLASS WEEK OF APRIL 5TH!!!**

Week of April 12th: "The Tell-Tale Heart" + Foreshadowing + POV pt. 2
Writing assignment: Is the narrator really crazy?

Week of April 20th: "The Story of an Hour" + Dialogue
Discussion/writing prompt: Rewriting the dialogue from the sister's point of view

**I HIGHLY suggest you print off the short stories ahead of class for annotations!**

Parental Guidance
Parents, these are common stories that are part of middle school ELA curriculum in public and private schools across the nation, and they do not contain inappropriate themes for this age. However, please look at a short summary of each story before committing to the class. Some stories can be scary or have themes your learner might not be comfortable with. This class is for students who love weird and surprising stories that have scary twists.

I am an experienced middle school teacher with multiple certifications, areas of expertise, and awards. I love seeing reluctant readers and writers develop a passion for literature and expressing themselves through writing. We have fun in my literature classes and I believe in student-driven learning: hearing students' voices is more important than hearing my own.
