Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
In this class, students will learn the basics of how genetics work to create living organisms. We will explore how traits from parents work together to create the traits seen in offspring. Students will observe traits within themselves and biological family and how to use a Punnet Square to discover possible outcomes in species. They will understand that traits are passed down to pffspring through the DNA of their parents. Students will see it modeled and then provide examples. As a teacher I use the MAWL method: Model, Assist, Watch, Let Go. I will model the method, assist the student, watch the student, and launch them to be independent in the skill. Students will be fully engaged through power point slides, interactive discussion, teacher and student modeling, as well as inspiration from others. A basic understanding of the scientific method would be helpful.
Class schedule is be as followed (subject to change of assigned topics need to be revisited in the next class meeting):

Teacher expertise and credentials
This course will lightly touch on sexual reproduction as the means in which traits from parents are transferred from parent organism to offspring. I will not go into detail of how that happens, but it will be implied with speaking of sexually reproducing organisms.
