Prior to this class students should take The Periodic Table of Elements Isn't Bohring, this will ensure they have the prior knowledge required to successfully complete this class. Students will learn what a chemical equation is and what it represents. We will review the periodic table, identification of elements and how to identify and count the individual atoms in a chemical formula. We will cover the parts of a chemical equation and the steps to balancing the equation. Students will work through a number of progressively more difficult equations to build their confidence. The intent of this class is to introduce the topic without the typical fear and frustration so many students feel when tackling it in high school. The class atmosphere will be relaxed and move at the speed of the students' abilities. It is suggested, but not required, that students complete The Periodic Table is Not Bohring prior to taking this class.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to identify the parts of a chemical equation.
Students will be able to identify when a chemical equation is balanced and when it is not.
