Students will read and analyze The Honest Truth, a chapter book, by Dan Gemeinhart. They will spend time predicting, discussing, and analyzing the characters and events. We will work on completing a plot diagram during the meetings.

The Honest Truth by Dan Gemeinhart is a great book about dreams, survival, and adventure. It’s a book about having hope even when you're dealing with an illness.  It is a 229 page book that will be read throughout a four week period. Students will be guided through discussions and encouraged to question and share their opinions and ideas about the characters and their situations. We will predict, inference, analyze, and make connections throughout our lessons.

***BEFORE our first class meeting, please read pages 1-30.***

Day #1 / Week #1 - introductory discussion, predictions, making inferences
*Homework: read chapters 1-4.5 (pages 1-71) and complete a comprehension worksheet

Day #2 / Week #2 - character analysis, cause and effect
* Homework: read chapters 5-9 (pages 72-152)  and complete a comprehension worksheet

Day #3 / Week #3 - wishes, hopes, motivation, goals
*Homework: read chapters 9.5-13.5 (pages 153-229) and complete a comprehension worksheet

Day #4 / Week #4 - Discussion of determination and survival. Completion of a plot diagram.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their reading and comprehension skills while learning about challenges. They will practice making inferences and text to self connections. Writing practice will be focused on through completion of weekly comprehension assignments.
