Class experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Students in the class will:
Annotate poetry
Analyze elements of poetry to form a more in-depth understanding:
structure and form; figurative language and poetic devices; sound and rhythm; subject and speaker; theme; tone and mood; and syntax

Students will learn about the life of the author and a brief history of what life was like in 19th century America.
I've spent 5 years teaching honors and gifted/talented classes. Although these students are middle school aged, their reading, writing, and comprehension levels range from 9th grade to 12th grade. I also privately tutor students at both the high school and college level.

These poems are are often dark, mention angels and demons, make reference to mythology (including Greek mythology), discuss death/mortality, and are considered Gothic horror literature. This is why I recommend this class for students aged 13+. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.
We will be using the poems "The Bells" and "The Raven" for this course. They are in the public domain, and will be available digitally or in print for each student in the class for annotation.
