Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Julie Colleen. I received my Bachelor of Science degree and Elementary School [K-8] certification from Eastern Michigan University in 1999. I earned a Master of Public Administration degree with a focus on Educational Leadership [K-12] from the University of Michigan in 2011. I’m certified to teach in Maryland, grades K-6 with an endorsement in reading. In Michigan, my certification is for grades K-8 with an endorsement in science. I am a certified school administrator in both Maryland and Michigan.

During my 20+ years as an educator, I have been fortunate to serve in a variety of roles. I have been a teacher, academic/assistant principal, reading specialist, curriculum writer, education consultant, and a manager of curriculum at the government level. My most recent in-classroom teaching experience was teaching grade four ELA and Social Studies [August 2019 - 2021] I presently teach online whole-classroom middle school science and grade 3 English Language Arts. I have also worked as a reading specialist for grades one to six.

My Outschool classes encourage a love of reading, writing and science. This is accomplished through lively Book Clubs, creative and specialized Writing Classes, fun and engaging Science Courses, Academic Courses [reading comprehension and writing], and One-to-One Tutoring. My classes are tailored to meet individual student needs. I often use the socratic method of education which results in higher-level thinking skills, active student participation, and thoughtfulness. I believe learning happens everyday and learning is fun!

On a personal note, I love traveling and experiencing new places and cultures. I have traveled to several countries around the world. I have lived in Belize, Costa Rica, and the United Arab Emirates [Abu Dhabi/Dubai].

I can't wait to see you in the classroom!
