Description

Class Experience

Students will improve their knowledge of reading comprehension, writing, listening, and speaking at the middle school level. They will learn to analyze text, think critically, and discuss text both verbally and through writing.
I am a certified educator who has been teaching middle school Reading and Language Arts for more than 19 years. I specialize in reading skills/strategies, teaching writing, and working with students at their own individual levels.
Each week, students will have both reading and writing assignments to be completed outside of class time. Specific assignment guidelines and required reading will be posted in the classroom weekly. Students are required to submit their work to the classroom/privately to me for detailed, individualized feedback (provided within 3 days).
Learners will need a copy of the novel, Inside Out and Back Again, by Thanhha Lai. They will also need a notebook and pencil for this course. Access to a printer is recommended, as there will be handouts and graphic organizers to print.
I will continually be using informal assessment in our class sessions, providing immediate feedback, support, and encouragement to each learner. I give detailed, individualized feedback for EACH assignment submitted in the classroom as well.
*I will create a written weekly progress report for each student via a private Outschool message and/or provide assignment/final grades BY PARENT REQUEST!*
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
The novel, Inside Out and Back Again (and related articles), contains some discussion of violence and politics as it focuses on the start of the Vietnam War. Please visit this link to learn more: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/inside-out-and-back-again
