This class is taught in English.
Students will improve their knowledge of reading comprehension, writing, listening, and speaking at the middle school level. They will learn to analyze text, think critically, and discuss text both verbally and through writing. Students will learn to create a structured paragraph as well as a full expository essay.
I am a certified educator who has been teaching middle school Reading and Language Arts for more than 19 years. I specialize in reading skills/strategies, teaching writing, and working with students at their own individual levels.
Each week, students will have both reading and writing assignments to be completed outside of class time. Specific assignment guidelines and required reading will be posted in the classroom weekly. Students are required to submit their work to the classroom/privately to me for detailed, individualized feedback (provided within 3-4 days).
Learners will need a copy of the novel, The Mark of the Dragonfly by Jaleigh Johnson. They will also need a notebook and pencil for this course. Access to a printer is recommended, as there will be handouts and graphic organizers to print.
I will continually be using informal assessment in our class sessions, providing immediate feedback, support, and encouragement to each learner. I give detailed, individualized feedback for EACH assignment submitted in the classroom as well. *I will create a written weekly progress report for each student via a private Outschool message and/or provide assignment/final grades BY PARENT REQUEST!*
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
The main characters are kidnapped by men who are described as "slave-traders." They are frequently in mild danger as the story progresses. There are several "battles" involving guns and crossbows, and which briefly mention blood. There is nothing very graphic or gory. The main characters hold hands once, and the boy kisses the girl on the cheek toward the end of the story.
