Live Group Course
This course features an introduction to the natural world by studying living things, taxonomy, and ecology through Charles Darwin's travels. This series will later lead to a set of lessons on nutrient cycles, food webs, and fire succession.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
We will be focusing on the biomes of the planet, some of the native plants and animals that live in these biomes, and the soil composition of each biome. This will lead to a later section that focuses on nutrient cycles and food webs. The class is structured based on discussion style learning in which students are asked a series of questions based on past learning and/or images. The idea is that students will get to the answer together, instead of being told all the answers, so that they have a better understanding. Students will interact with me through lecture and discussion.

Learning Goals

We will spend the first part of the class learning about living things vs non-living things, the importance of science inquiry, curiosity, and design, and taxonomy.
We will spend the middle portion of class on ecology by focusing on Charles Darwin and his time in the Galapagos Islands, as well as key species in Arizona.

over 8 Weeks
Unit 1: Introduction to Living Things
Lesson 1:
Francesco Redi and Spontaneous Generation
The Francesco Redi experiment involving meat and flies. This experiment proved that spontaneous generation does not exist and introduces a lesson on what qualifies something as living or not.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Characteristics of Living Things
This lesson builds off of the previous in which we discuss what is and what is not a living thing. We will go through the 8 characteristics of life.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
How Agassiz taught Shaler to See
We will read the excerpt, "How Agassiz taught Shaler to See," and discuss the importance of observation and organization. This is a longer read than the last, and it is important that we discuss the content while reading it. This lesson helps to recent reading and discussion skills.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
History of taxons and Linnaeus
We will use the last reading to discuss the history of Carl Linnaeus, his use of taxons, his influence on the current taxonomy system, and how to read taxonomy charts.
50 mins online live lesson

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Any upsetting or scary topics will include the mention of dying materials in terms of soil health and composition. We do not go into detail about the killing or details of death of plants and animals, but it is mentioned that organisms will die in their environments and their nutrients add to the available nutrients in the soil.
Supply List
Notebook, pencil, highlighter
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
I use the "Life Science" textbook approved in Arizona for all content. I have supplemented the content with my own research. It is not required for the students to use it.
