Middle School Latin I, Oxford Latin, Book I - Accelerated Summer Course

Brigid Johnson, MA Tufts University
Average rating:5.0Number of reviews:(178)
This 8-week course will cover the first half of the Oxford Latin I text.

Class experience

Students will complete and master the concepts from the Oxford Latin I text. They will understand the basics of Latin grammar and learn the foundation of translating a Latin text, alongside the history, culture, and mythology of Ancient Rome.
I have an MA from Tufts University in Classical Studies, where I served as a teaching assistant for Intermediate Latin, Roman History, and Classical Mythology. My undergraduate degree was earned from the University of Iowa in Classical Languages and History, where I tutored students in Latin, mythology, and history. I went on to teach Latin and Roman history/culture to middle school aged to college level students and continue to privately tutor students in Latin at various levels. I have successfully prepared students for the AP and National Latin Exams.
Homework Offered
Students will be assigned homework from the exercises in the Oxford text 4-5 times a week. These assignments are designed to take no more than an hour. Students should study at least half an hour for the quizzes. Although exams are take home and open book and note, I still highly encourage a twenty to thirty minute review before them.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will be assessed on homework preparation and participation (50% of final grade-25% for participation, up to 5 pts/day and 25% for homework, up to 5 pts/day), quizzes (25% of final grade) and exams (25% of final grade). Points for quizzes and exams will depend upon content. Quizzes will primarily consist of vocabulary and forms of the verbs, nouns, adjectives, and/or pronouns. Exams will focus on translation and grammar with occasional addition of forms.
Grades Offered
Oxford Latin Course, Part I (2nd Edition)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Ancient Rome was a culture of violence; however, the Oxford text does an excellent job of presenting Roman culture at an age-appropriate level, and I do not greatly expand on topics that pertain to excessive violence, murder, or suicide. These topics are handled with utmost care and are presented so that they are not all graphic in nature.
We will use the Oxford Latin Course, Part I.
